Since winning the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year competition in 1980, Nicholas Daniel has toured the world as a virtuoso of the oboe, and has been a tireless champion of the instrument. This is his fourth visit to Malvern Concert Club. His rich, flexible tone and brilliant technique have led him to perform not only the mainstays of the oboe repertoire, such as Vaughan Williams’ Concerto and Mozart’s Oboe Quartet, but also to commission many new pieces and unearth neglected works. In 2012 he was awarded the prestigious Queen’s Medal for Music.

Nicholas Daniel began directing orchestras from the oboe from the start of his career, and is now a respected conductor in his own right, while as a founder member of the Haffner Wind Ensemble and the Britten Oboe Quartet, he continues to pursue his love of chamber music. As a soloist, Nicholas Daniel has many recordings to his name; the Quartet’s debut disc of oboe quartets will be released on the Harmonia Mundi label in early 2017.

Tonight’s eclectic programme ends with the Mozart Quartet, which Nicholas Daniel played on his first visit to the Club in 1986 – with Sally Beamish on viola! Of local interest, the short opening work is one of Elgar’s earliest compositions, though not published until 2008.
