SUMMARY:Britten Oboe Quartet at Jordan's Music Club
DESCRIPTION:Elgar: Andante and Allegro\nBritten: Phantasy Quartet Op. 2\nMozart: Flute Quartet in C major\, K171\nThea Musgrave: Cantilena\nDanish Trad: Sønderho Bridal Trilogy\nMozart: Oboe Quartet in F major\, K370 \nWe welcome back Nicholas Daniel and his string ensemble\, the Britten Oboe Quartet. Nicholas Daniel founded the quartet together with his colleagues and co-principals of the award-winning Britten Sinfonia. They aim to bring music of the highest quality to audiences and to explore lesser-known works\, both British and from abroad\, as well as standard classics such as Mozart’s oboe quartet. This concert fulfils their aim magnificently. \nWe are treated to both the oboe and a flute quartet (played on the oboe) by Mozart\, together with a fascinating collection of both well and lesser-known pieces. Elgar’s Andante and Allegro was an early work written in 1878 and only recently published from the manuscript kept at the British Library. Britten’s Phantasy Quartet is another early work written while he was still a student and his first work to be heard publicly. His harmonic language was not yet fully developed but is still striking in its inventiveness and originality. Thea Musgrave’s Cantilena\, commissioned in 2008\, is a short lyrical piece where an outsider (the oboe) joins the group (a string trio) and adds to their dialogue. The penultimate piece is a set of three traditional Danish wedding folk tunes dating back hundreds of years\, from a tiny village called Sønderho in the western part of Denmark.

SUMMARY:Serenity - Nicholas Daniel and the Ulster Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Sibelius – Symphony No. 7\nR. Strauss – Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra\nBrahms – Symphony No. 2 \nNICHOLAS DANIEL\, oboe\nDANIELE RUSTIONI\, conductor\nUlster Orchestra \nVery few composers manage to evoke the landscape of their homeland in the way that seems to come so effortlessly to Sibelius – it’s difficult to listen to his Seventh Symphony without imagining yourself in the epic forests and below the vast skies of the Finnish landscape. \nRichard Strauss’s Oboe Concerto makes the most of the pastoral qualities of the solo instrument\, keeping us outdoors. And the pastoral mood continues with Brahms’s cheerful\, soaring Second Symphony. Brahms himself wrote in the symphony’s manuscript “Es liebt sich so lieblich im Lenze!” (“It’s so lovely to be in love in the springtime!”)\, and this concert looks forward to those days to come.

SUMMARY:Southbank Sinfonia - Eruptions of Sound and Colour
DESCRIPTION:Mark Simpson – Geysir\nMozart – Serenade No.10 in Bb major K361/370a “Gran Partita” \nNicholas Daniel\, conductor \nPerformed in the round\, imagine the pressure and tension of a geyser ready to erupt. Tense stillness followed by a shattering eruption. Mark Simpson’s ‘Geysir’ – the Icelandic word for geyser – captures this. In 8 minutes\, his sound world fluctuates from violent pulsations of sound and texture to ethereal flurries. \nComposed as a partner to Mozart’s ‘Serenade in Bb’\, Simpson draws upon the same tonality and instrumentation: 12 winds plus double bass. Embark on a tour de force of colours and textures. \nYou can’t miss the drama in Mozart’s ‘Serenade’ either. From the sonorous opening to intricate chains of variations\, operatic outbursts to rapid passages\, Mozart’s ambitious work is sure to thrill and entertain.
