Rechtmann  Quintet in E flat Op.71 \nThe Orsino Ensemble is a flexible format chamber ensemble with a central focus on the five outstanding wind players at its core. \nEach a leader in their field\, the group’s members are committed to showcasing the depth and versatility of the wind chamber repertoire; expanding and reducing the ensemble’s format as needed across their different programmes. \nThe ensemble was founded in 2018 by Adam Walker with inaugural performances at the Aldeburgh Festival. Recent highlights have included performances at Wigmore Hall and Sibelius Hall\, and appearances at West Cork Chamber Music\, Chipping Campden\, Two Moors and Ryedale Festivals\, as well as a weekend residency at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. \nThe ensemble has collaborated with artists including Pavel Kolesnikov\, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Katya Apekisheva. The Orsino Ensemble’s first recording\, featuring French repertoire for Winds and Piano\, was released for Chandos in 2021 to critical acclaim across the board\, with The Guardian praising the recording as ‘a disc that beguiles and dazzles in every bar’. This was followed in 2023 by ‘Echoes of Bohemia’; a disc exploring the strong tradition of Czech wind playing through works by Reicha\, Janácek\, Pavel Haas and Martin?.

It was lost for more than 100 years and only rediscovered in 1920 in a pile of scores in an archive in Salzburg. But there’s nothing forgettable about this music. As exuberant and fresh as any concerto Mozart composed\, it has a theatrical energy that will make you feel like you’re taking your seat for a night at the opera – or just being carried away on a fresh Summer breeze. Who better to perform it than one of Britain’s best-known oboists and a master of this repertoire\, Nicholas Daniel OBE\, in his first concert with Sinfonia Viva. \nNicholas turns conductor for the rest of our concert\, which features two pieces he is known for championing. He conducted the UK premiere of …I May Turn To Salt by British composer Hannah Kendall earlier this year in London\, and this concert will be only the second time it is performed in this country. That London premiere also featured tonight’s opening number\, the Symphony No. 2 in D Major by one of Mozart’s 18th century contemporaries\, the composer\, virtuoso violinist and champion fencer\, Joseph Bologne. This is upbeat music is sure to put a smile on your face\, with a melody that\, even if you’re hearing it for the first time\, you’ll feel like you’ve known it all your life. \nThe climax of the concert is a chance for two of our string players to step forward and shine. Sophie Rosa (violin) and Wenhan Jiang (viola) perform Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Violin\, Viola and Orchestra\, described by Gramophone Magazine as “an iconic work for many Mozart lovers\, and arguably the greatest music he wrote in Salzburg”. A fabulous mixture of the light and dark in Mozart’s music\, the vivacious final movement is nevertheless guaranteed to send you home with a spring in your step.

DESCRIPTION:Nicholas Daniel oboe\, Rebecca Miller conductor\, London Mozart Players \nShaw: Entr’acte for String Orchestra\nBarber: Canzonetta for oboe and strings\nVaughan Williams: Concerto in A minor for oboe and strings\nBarber: Adagio for Strings\nTchaikovsky: Serenade for Strings \nProms at St Jude’s often takes place during Pride Month\, and tonight ? nearly 55 years to the day since the first Pride marches in June 1970\, following the 1969 Stonewall Uprising ? we celebrate three LGBTQ+ composers and the immense contribution they have made in the history of classical music. Caroline Shaw is the youngest winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music and described Entr’acte as ‘like a minuet and trio\, riffing on that classical form but taking it a little further; [it] suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass\, in a kind of absurd\, subtle\, technicolor transition’. American Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings is one of the most recognisable pieces of classical music in the world – it was used at Franklin Roosevelt’s funeral and after JFK’s assassination ? and Tchaikovsky’s heartfelt Serenade for Strings is considered to be one of the late Romantic era’s definitive compositions.
