SUMMARY:Iestyn Davies & Nicholas Daniel & Fretwork - The Hidden Face
DESCRIPTION:The legendary consort of viols Fretwork\, the countertenor Iestyn Davies\, who has received worldwide acclaim for his vocal control and musicality\, and Nicholas Daniel\, one of the best British oboists\, bridge the gap between John Taverner (ca. 1490-1545) and John Tavener (1944-2013). \nFretwork will perform the entire Missa Gloria tibi trinitas by Taverner in an instrumental version. \nThis six-part mass was composed for Cardinal College in Oxford\, and is based on the Gregorian chant of the same name that was intended for Trinity Sunday. The mass\, and particularly the In Nomine passage in the Benedictus\, initiated a great tradition in consort music. \nWe will also hear two musical prayers by John Tavener: The Hidden Face and Nipson. The Hidden Face is a prayer for countertenor\, oboe and consort of viols. It is hushed music\, with no space for the ego\, in which Tavener aims to address the divine: the Hidden Face. Nipson\, in which Tavener reflects on his sins\, was commissioned by Fretwork. The text comes from a fountain in Istanbul: “Nipson anomemata me monan opsin” (Cleanse my sins\, not only my face). The palindrome is attributed to Gregory of Nazianze (329-389). \nProgramme\nJ. Taverner: Missa Gloria tibi trinitas | J. Tavener: The Hidden Face | Nipson \nPerformers\nIestyn Davies\, countertenor | Nicholas Daniel\, oboe | Fretwork

SUMMARY:Britten Oboe Quartet at the University of York
DESCRIPTION:Founded by the internationally acclaimed oboist Nicholas Daniel and his co-principals and colleagues from the award-winning Britten Sinfonia\, the Britten Oboe Quartet is renowned for their warm\, expressive and delightful performances\, shaped by the musicians’ experience of playing together over many years. The group’s imaginative programming embraces music not only for the oboe quartet but for various other chamber music combinations too and explores popular repertoire alongside lesser-known works. The programme opens with a short\, lyrical piece by Scottish composer Thea Musgrave and an arrangement of one of Schubert’s finest early string quartets. Featuring traditional dance melodies from the Faroe Islands in Denmark\, the Bridal Trilogy takes the listener on a journey across the full spectrum of emotions experienced within marriage. These lyrical and heartfelt pieces are followed by Mozart’s charming Flute Quartet K. 171 and the poignantly beautiful aria ‘Aus Liebe’ from St Matthew Passion.

SUMMARY:Lohja City Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Top oboist Nicholas Daniel will visit Lohja again as conductor of the entire concert. This time\, Daniel brings with him the Concertante in Moto perpetuo by the British composer Simon Bainbridge\, with its minimalist influences. The concert also includes Benjamin Britten’s Sinfonietta\, which the composer dedicated to his own composition teacher. \nSiegfried-Idyll\, that most beloved orchestral work of Richard Wagner\, known for his operas\, is a symphonic poem for chamber orchestra. The piece was Wagner’s birthday present to his wife Cosima and is named after their son. \nPastorale d’été (Summer Pastoral) by Arthur Honegger\, a French-Swiss composer\, was inspired by the dazzlingly beautiful scenery of the Swiss Alps.
