SUMMARY:BBC Proms 2022 - Prom 37
DESCRIPTION:Prom 37: Haydn\, Vaughan Williams\, Kaija Saariaho and Beethoven \nFrom sunrise to high noon: this matinee concert from the Tyneside-based Royal Northern Sinfonia under its Principal Conductor Dinis Sousa begins with the sun rising over Haydn’s joyous early symphony. It ends with Beethoven cutting loose in sheer\, unbuckled glee\, in the rollercoaster finale of his brightest symphony. In between\, the skies just gets brighter and more beautiful\, as oboist Nicholas Daniel takes the solo spot in Vaughan Williams’s playful\, pastoral Oboe Concerto – another anniversary salute to this great British master. Then violinist Maria Maria Wloszczowska is the soloist in Kaija Saariaho’s ravishing Vers toi qui es si loin – a wordless love song\, adapted from the acclaimed opera L’amour de loin by one of today’s true sonic magicians. \nThere will be no interval \nProgramme\nJoseph Haydn: Symphony No. 6 in D major\, ‘Le matin’ (20 mins)\nRalph Vaughan Williams: Oboe Concerto (19 mins)\nKaija Saariaho: Vers toi qui es si loin (7 mins) London premiere\nLudwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 4 in B flat major (34 mins) \nPerformers\nNicholas Daniel\, oboe\nMaria Wloszczowska\, violin\nRoyal Northern Sinfonia\, Dinis Sousa

SUMMARY:New Horizons - Nicholas Daniel and the Leicester Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Leicester Symphony Orchestra is 100 this year. To celebrate our centenary\, we are performing a wide range of music written during the past 100 years in Leicester’s fantastic De Montfort Hall. \nWe are delighted to be able to link our celebrations with the celebration of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams and welcome one of the world’s greatest oboe players\, Nicholas Daniel\, to perform the Vaughan Williams Oboe concerto on Sunday 22 May. \nNicholas was the Leicester Symphony Orchestra president from 1998 to 2002 and then our conductor until 2005. We are really looking forward to welcoming him back to the stage with us\, this time as our guest soloist. \nThe concerto was written towards the end of the second world war and inspired by the playing of Leon Goossens\, to whom it is dedicated\, and who gave its first performance in Liverpool on 30 September 1944. \nNicholas Daniel\, oboe\nJohn Andrews\, conductor \nProgramme to include: \nBRITTEN Four Sea Interludes\nVAUGHAN WILLIAMS Oboe Concerto\nSHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 5 \nTickets £20/£16 (concessions £5)

SUMMARY:Sinfonia of Birmingham
DESCRIPTION:Vaughan Williams The Wasps Overture\nParry An English Suite\nVaughan Williams Concerto in A minor for Oboe and Strings\nVaughan Williams Symphony No. 5 in D major \nConductor Michael Seal\nSoloist Nicholas Daniel (oboe) \nNo Festival celebrating RVW’s music could be complete without his Concerto for Oboe and Strings – written in 1944 and all too often woefully overlooked. We are delighted to welcome Nicholas Daniel\, the UK’s premier oboist\, to shine a much-deserved light on this beautiful work in the central concert of our five-day Festival. \nAssociate CBSO conductor Michael Seal directs the Sinfonia of Birmingham which last appeared in the area as part of the Warwick & Leamington Midsummer Music Festival last June and is quickly gaining a reputation with our audiences for its lively and exciting performances. \nA quintessential reminder of the influence on RVW’s music by his teacher\, Hubert Parry\, appears in the form of another rare gem – Parry’s English Suite for Strings – but it is RVW who occupies centre stage in this concert as we take advantage of having a full symphony orchestra in our Festival for one night only! \nUnreserved Tickets: £25 front nave | £17 rear nave
